Plantae: Fungal morphologies and connections
(A) Selected fungal lineages’ relationships with and without parasitic species . Glomeromycotina and Mucoromycotina (Mu) are included in the phylum Mucoromycota, which is designated with the letter M. The only order in the Mucoromycotina known to harbor symbiotic fungi—that is, mucoromycotina fine root endophytes (MFRE) and ectomycorrhizal fungi—is Endogonales, which is denoted by the letter E. (B) Diagrams showing the variations in intracellular morphology between fungal colonization by Arum-type arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and MFRE. Based on pictures, the MFRE diagram shows how fine hyphae diffuse into fine-fanning hyphae after entering the cells through a number of entrance points. The schematic of AM fungus is derived from pictures that show an arbuscule.
