The first draft of Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) genome is out.

Rubber tree has a gigantic genome size of 2 billion base pairs.Scientists have predicted 68,955 genes in the genome.78% of the genome is repetitive. The draft will be useful in increasing latex production,providing information about the girth of the plant useful for timber industry,help in developing disease(rubber blight) resistant varieties and allergenicity.
